In this Photoshop tutorial, i will tell you about the basic Inset / Pressed text technique and will also teach you the Advanced Inset / Pressed text effect using Photoshop.
You can also read my other article if you want to do the Inset / Pressed text using CSS3.

Step 1

Create a new document in Photoshop 550px by 450px as shown in the image. You can also set your own image size.

Step 2

Now select the Gradient tool and create a Radial gradient of DarkBrown #a9834f to Light Brown #c8a46d. Dont bother much about the background, just atleast you can get some good gradient. You can also apply gradient to layer styles to get a more precise control over it

Step 3

Now after applying gradient, apply some textures to it. So now go to Filters –> Texture –> Texturizer and apply canvas texture. You can also apply texture usign Layer Styles –> Pattern Overlay and apply any paper texture to it

Now it will look like this

Step 4

Now choose any bold font and write any text you like in white color, center align it with respect to background.

Step 5- Basics

In this step i will first explain the basic idea of Inset or Pressed text. We use following effects

  • Layer Styles — Drop Shadow With Soft Light
  • Layer Styles — Inner Shadow With Multiply

picturepush

Now first we will add some gradient to make the white text a little better. See the settings below

Now the text will look like this

Step 5.1

Now first we are going to add the drop shadow with the settings below

Now the text will look like this

Step 5.2

Now we are going to add the Inner shadow with the settings below. We can also apply inner shadow with Multiply layer blending option but i have used Linear light

Now the text will look like this

Step 6

Now we will apply Satin effect from Layer styles

Now the text will look like this

Step 7

Now in the end, we will finally give some bevel effect for final touches

Final Image in the end will look like this
